Around 1987, many promoters of the neighborhood and newer residents described the boundaries as within East 34th Street, East 42nd Street, Madison Avenue, and the East River. In 1999, Frank P. Vardy, the demographer for the City Planning Commission, said that the traditional boundary is within East 34th Street, East 40th Street, Madison Avenue and Third Avenue. The neighborhood is part of Manhattan Community Board 6. This quiet and comfortable area on the east side of Manhattan is all about those mid-to-high income singles and couples who live in high rises; those just moving on up from smaller apartments in cheaper areas of the city. Once considered a ladies-who-lunch-and-shop zone, Murray Hill now attracts affluent young families. As apartments here tend to be smaller, there's been a lot of buying-and-combining. Locals believe that it was the W hotels on 39th Street that brought cool chic to the neighborhood - but Ian Shrager might argue that Morgans did that years before. Convenient to everything, experts claim the best values in town are here. |
