Lawrence &amp; Co. Real Estate to help get MAI back on track after a series of bombshell allegations over bounced checks and spiralling overheads. Both sides said that A.C. Lawrence is considering acquiring or merging with MAI.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;There was still no word last week on when and if the deal will officially happen, however. &quot;I don&apos;t have anything of substance (to report) right now,&quot; Weinstein told Brokers Weekly.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Weinstein said MAI is still in talks with A.C. Lawrence while also considering &quot;all opportunities to grow.&quot; An announcement may not come until January, Weinstein said.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;MAI was formed in 1984 by Weinstein, who got his start in the industry renting apartment in a small brokerage house on the Upper East Side. Her bank statement showed that the funds had left her account, so she was baffled when, a month after moving in, she received a statement from her landlord showing an outstanding balance. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It turned out the $1,500 security deposit check that Manhattan Apartments Inc. -- her real estate firm, also known as MAI -- had written to the landlord on her behalf had bounced. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She contacted MAI, demanding to know what happened to her money. And brokers say the movement in these markets - places like Williamsburg, Harlem and Long Island City - can be attributed to one thing: value.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Buyers in today&apos;s market don&apos;t just want a home - they want a bargain. While price corrections in prime neighborhoods have returned some buyers to the most desirable Manhattan markets, the best bang for the buck still remains in fringe areas. The event was held this past weekend at the Creek Theatre.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The marathon reading included 8 plays over 24 hours, 20 actors reading 300 roles and with Richard III and Henry V being read at 1am in the morning!  &quot;I love Shakespeare&apos;s wisdom and the Judith Shakespeare Company is worthy cause since they&apos;ve helped so many young people get excited with Shakespeare.  &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The not-for-profit sector has been one of the worst hit by the economic downturn and we in the real estate industry has an obligation to help out our arts and education programs.&quot;  Many of del Rosario&apos;s contacts in real estate gave a pledge from as little as $25 to as large as $1,500 with agents giving from Corcoran, Citi-Habitats and Prudential Douglas Elliman. In other words: they are a &quot;necessity,&quot; says Antonio G. del Rosario, President of Sales for A.C. Lawrence and Company.  &quot;I had never seen a short sale pre-Lehman Brothers,&quot; he said. &quot;Three months later, short sales are almost everywhere. We&apos;ve become like the rest of the country.&quot; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&quot;Rarely is there a foreclosure in New York City because of the predominance of co-ops, but I have seen and worked with several short sales in the past five months,&quot; del Rosario said, adding that he is aware of eight or so in the Financial District and about a dozen in the Midtown West area. While specific numbers for local short sales are hard to come by, the farther you go from Manhattan, the safer it is to say that there will be more short sales.
